Vasyl Lomachenko vs George Kambosos betting preview: Tips and odds

An exciting week of boxing action kicks off this weekend when Vasyl Lomachenko steps into the ring with George Kambosos Jr. in Perth, Australia, on Saturday, May 11th (Sunday UK time).

Lomachenko will be looking to bounce back from a narrow defeat at the hands of Devin Haney last year but will face a tough test from Kambosos, who looks to build on his victory over Maxi Hughes in 2023.

In this Vasyl Lomachenko vs George Kambosos preview, I offer my thoughts on how I think the action will play out and who will have their hand raised at the end of the night.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs George Kambosos outright odds

Vasyl Lomachenko is the strong favourite with the bookmakers in Perth this weekend. The former champ is priced at 7/50 with bet365, while George Kambosos Jr. is at 5/1 with Sky Bet and similar prices with other bookmakers.

Vasyl Lomachenko’s previous fights and what to expect

Vasyl Lomachenko is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of his generation, and this clash with Kambosos could be the beginning of one final victory lap for the fighter. The 36-year-old has stated that he believes he only has around a year left in the ring, and if that is the case, he will no doubt want to go out in style.

The Matrix will want to right the wrongs of his narrow loss against Devin Haney last year, and while Kambosos will provide a tough test, I can’t see Loma failing to get back to winning ways.

Of course, this fight has added significance for Loma. In 2022, he pulled out of a title clash with Kambosos Jr. to continue fighting for the Ukrainian army. Saturday will finally see the two fighters get the chance to square up.

George Kambosos’s previous fights and what to expect

George Kambosos Jr’s 20-0 unbeaten record was brought to a grinding halt when he suffered back-to-back defeats against Devin Haney in 2022, with the first of these matches supposed to be his originally scheduled clash with Lomachenko.

Kambosos bounced back in 2023, scoring a narrow decision victory over Maxi Hughes in Oklahoma. However, the impact of his losses to Haney was clear for all to see, with his performance against Hughes not being particularly convincing.

The Emperor will face one of the toughest challenges of his career when he meets a determined Lomachenko in Perth this weekend. He will bid to add the now-vacant IBF lightweight title to his collection, with him currently holding the IBO lightweight.

Lomachenko vs Kambosos betting tips and odds

With Lomachenko being the overwhelming favourite for Saturday’s fight, I have picked out some other markets and bets with better value from the following boxing betting sites

Vasily Lomachenko by KO/TKO at 12/5 (bet365)

George Kambosos Jr has never been stopped in a fight before, but with such good odds, I am going to back Vasily Lomachenko to become the first to do so at 12/5 with bet365.

Loma has a strong record of taking down boxers who fight on the inside and Kambosos could become the latest to fall victim to the former P4P number one. The fight will likely be fought in close quarters, and Loma is an expert in these kinds of environments. He will pick away at Kambosos, who will rely on his counter-attacking power to stop the fight.

I was not convinced by Kambosos in his last fight, and a determined Lomachenko has the potential to hand him his third defeat in four fights and to do so emphatically.

🥊 Bet on Lomachenko to win by KO/TKO at 12/5 at bet365 🥊

Under 10 rounds at 11/4 (Sky Bet)

Building on this, a bet on under 10 rounds at 11/4 with Sky Bet offers some good value. Lomachenko has a record of chipping away at his opponents and effectively forcing them into submission.

Lomachenko is not a fighter that is in a rush for a stoppage. Only three of his fights have ever been stopped before the sixth round, and I can’t see him making it a fourth in Australia this weekend.

If this is to be the start of Lomachenko’s retirement tour, he will want to go out in style, and taking down Kambosos inside 10 rounds would be an excellent way to begin.

🥊 Bet on the fight to last under 10 rounds at 11/4 with Sky Bet 🥊

Fight to go the Distance - No at 11/5 (BetUK)

Lomachenko is one of the greatest of his generation and a guaranteed future hall-of-famer. While many will be backing a decision victory, I think Loma will want to remind the world exactly what he is capable of this weekend, and schooling Kambosos in his own backyard would do that.

Of course, Kambosos could also land the upset, and if he were to do that, he would probably need to stop Lomachenko, whose technical abilities make a points win extremely difficult. If you want to back the fight to go the distance, I recommend doing so at 11/5 with BetUK.

Who is more likely to win, Lomachenko or Kambosos?

Lomachenko is the more likely winner on Saturday night. The bookmakers heavily favour him, with Sky Bet pricing him at 1/8 and Kambosos Jr. priced at 5/1.

What belt are Hi-Tech and Ferocious fighting for?

Vasil Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr will fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title in Perth this weekend. The belt was last held by Devin Haney, with the fighter vacating it ahead of his junior welterweight clash with Regis Prograis in December.

How long is Loma’s professional career?

Lomachenko's first professional fight was in October 210, when he defeated José Luis Ramírez for the WBO international featherweight title. Since then, he has had 20 professional fights, winning 17 and losing three. Before turning professional, Loma had one of the most successful amateur boxing careers of all time. The Ukranian won 396 fights, losing just one. He was also a multiple-time world champion and won back-to-back Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012.

Whose fighting style is more likely to prevail?

Vasil Lomachenko is one of the greatest southpaw fighters to have laced up a pair of gloves, and Kambosos could provide the perfect dancing partner for him to showcase his style this weekend. Lomachenko excels in more intimate fights, being able to attack his opponent from all angles, while Kambosos has proven himself to be an effective counter-puncher.

I think the fight presents Lomachenko with the perfect opportunity to get inside and chip away at his opponent, showing us that, at 36 years old, he is far from over the hill yet.

Which fighter has more KOs in their career, Lomachenko or Kambosos?

Lomachenko has more KOs than Kambosos. He has won 17 fights, 11 of which were by stoppage, while Kambosos has won 21, 10 of which were by knockout.

Undercard fights to look out for

Andrew Moloney and Pedro Guevara will fight for the interim WBC super flyweight title in the night's co-main event. Moloney is fighting in front of a home crowd, and the Australian is the favourite with the bookies, with Sky Bet pricing him at 1/2. If you want to back Guevara for the win, he is available at 13/8.

British boxer Nina Hughes will put her WBA bantamweight title on the line against Australian Cherneka Johnson earlier in the night. Hughes is the favourite in the bout, with Sky Bet pricing her at 2/5, with Johnson at 9/4.
