Zach Edey's dominance at the NCAA Tournament is looking strangely familiar.

The 7ft 4in Purdue Boilermakers star is putting up Shaq-like numbers and recently became the first player to have three straight games with at least 20 points and three blocks in March Madness since O'Neal in 1991 and 1992.

Shaq, who recorded the impressive stat-line at LSU over 30 years ago, caught wind of Edey's performances and christened him with a new nickname.

"I'm changing your name to Zachille O'Neal," 'The Big Aristotle' reportedly said.

Edey, a towering center who's even taller than Victor Wembanyama, started off the streak in last year's tournament when Purdue were upset by No.16-seeded Farleigh Dickinson in the first round.

The Canadian had 21 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks in a shock 58-63 loss.

Edey kicked off this year's 'Big Dance' with a 30-point, 21-rebound, three-block performance in a 78-50 win against Grambling State.

His incredible play continued on Sunday when he scored 23 points and had 14 rebounds and three blocks in a 106-67 victory against Utah State.

Despite his stellar play, there are still those that question Edey's game and suggest he's only good because he's tall.

However, Boilermakers head coach Matt Painter has come to the defence of his star center, insisting those that say that 'shouldn't cover basketball'.

"Yeah, they just shouldn't cover basketball," Painter said in his post-game press conference on Sunday.

"You go to school, and you learn things or whatever. But we all don't like every single class we're in, right? It's kind of a necessary evil. It's like going to work. You don't like everybody you work with, or you don't like certain parts of your job. It's tough right? You've gotta be able to deal with certain things that are difficult.

"I just think everybody should like, take tests, on knowledge of what they're doing. I think all coaches should take tests so they understand refereeing and I think all referees should take a test so they understand coaching.

"And I think all journalists should have to take a basketball quiz or test. Anybody that tweets, they should have to be able to do it and they say something so moronic as that?

"Then they should have to have a probationary status where they can't tweet for three months. I think it'll help society. Just try to knock out the fools so they don't have to meet at the local Wal-Mart and say things that don't make any sense."

Edey recently declared for the NBA Draft but it's unclear how highly he's rated.

He's very much a throwback centre who does his best work in the paint, but today's NBA is all about three-point shooting, even for bigs.

Still, Edey is the consensus best player in college basketball in a class decidedly lacking in top-end talent.

All he can do is continue to put up great numbers, rack up wins and hopefully lead Purdue to a national title.

And now, he's just one win away from doing so.

After scoring a career-high 40 points and 16 rebounds in the Boilermakers' 72-66 win over Tennessee in the Elite Eight, Edey registered 20 points and 12 rebounds in a 63-50 win over NC State in the Final Four.

Following the victory, Edey was able to meet Shaq for the first time.
